Osteuropa einschließlich Russland verfügt über wirtschaftliche Stärken wie große Rohstoffvorkommen, industrielle Traditionen, gut ausgebildete Fachkräfte in technischen Bereichen und bedeutende Agrarflächen. Gleichzeitig bestehen strukturelle Herausforderungen durch demografischen Rückgang in mehreren Ländern, Abhängigkeit von Energie- und Rohstoffexporten, politische Spannungen, sowie teilweise geringere Innovations- und Investitionsdynamik im Vergleich zu Westeuropa. Die Wirtschaft vieler Staaten wird stark von Energie, Bergbau und Schwerindustrie geprägt. Ergänzend spielen Landwirtschaft, verarbeitendes Gewerbe, IT-Dienstleistungen und wachsender Handel mit Asien und der EU eine wichtige Rolle.
