SSAB postpones commissioning of new steel mill in Luleå by 12 months (Cision)

SSAB has commenced preparatory work to build a new, state-of-the-art steel mill in Luleå, which will replace the current blast furnace-based production. Vattenfall Eldistribution has announced that reinforcements to the transmission grid for the new steel mill will not be delivered as planned and following an initial analysis, it is estimated that the planned start-up of the new steel mill will be postponed by 12 months, from the end of 2028 to the end of 2029. The revised timeline does not affect the previously communicated investment framework of 4.5 billion euros.

SSAB has signed an agreement to purchase high-quality automotive steel scrap from Volvo Cars' Olofström production plant in Sweden to be recycled and used at SSAB's mill in Oxelösund to produce decarbonized steel. SSAB will start receiving high-quality automotive steel scrap with a ramp up during 2026 and the full volume from 2027 onward.

The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) has signed two 15-year loan agreements with global steel maker SSAB to co-finance the construction of a fossil-free steel mill in Luleå, Sweden. SSAB has secured EUR 2.3 billion of green financing for the transformation project to build a state-of-the-art fossil-free mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden. The transformation project is key to enable SSAB to re-position SSAB Europe as a maker of premium products, to lower production costs, and to reduce CO2 emissions from operations.
