Today construction of SSAB's new steel mill in Luleå started with the Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch and SSAB's CEO Johnny Sjöström participating in a groundbreaking ceremony. The new mill strengthens SSAB's long-term competitiveness and is expected to reduce Sweden's total carbon dioxide emissions by seven percent.

FI proceeds with case regarding goodwill impairment review (Cision)

As previously disclosed, the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FI) opened a review in March 2025 regarding the disclosure around the goodwill impairment reported by SSAB in December 2022. FI has now informed SSAB that it has opened a sanction evaluation in the matter.
A goodwill impairment of SEK 33.3 billion was reported in the report for the fourth quarter of 2022. SSAB Weathering steel defies marine conditions on the Huikku Bridge in Hailuoto (Cision)

SSAB Weathering 460ML steel is the main material used in the Huikku Bridge, which is part of a causeway connecting Riutunkari, Oulu, and Huikku in Hailuoto, which is the largest island in the Bothnian Bay. The 767-meter-long cntinuous composite girder bridge with a reinforced concrete deck consists of 25 steel sections weighing nearly 100 tonnes each.

RMD′s hot box detection system in operation (Cision)

During the first half of 2025, RMD developed, on behalf of a customer, a system for hot box detection and continuous temperature monitoring of axlebox bearings. RMD has now installed the first system in one of the locomotives used by SSAB's shunting operator VÄTE Trafik in Borlänge and Oxelösund. All locomotives used for the assignment will soon be equipped with the system. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

NCC and SSAB have signed a partnering agreement for the planning and execution of building and civil engineering work for a new steel mill in Luleå.

The new steel mill at Svartön in Luleå is part of SSAB's strategy to offer emission-free special and premium steel. When the plant is complete, SSAB will discontinue the existing furnace-based production system in Luleå.

SSAB postpones commissioning of new steel mill in Luleå by 12 months (Cision)

SSAB has commenced preparatory work to build a new, state-of-the-art steel mill in Luleå, which will replace the current blast furnace-based production. Vattenfall Eldistribution has announced that reinforcements to the transmission grid for the new steel mill will not be delivered as planned and following an initial analysis, it is estimated that the planned start-up of the new steel mill will be postponed by 12 months, from the end of 2028 to the end of 2029. The revised timeline does not affect the previously communicated investment framework of 4.5 billion euros.
