Die Mongolei verfügt über erhebliche wirtschaftliche Stärken durch große Rohstoffvorkommen wie Kupfer, Kohle und Gold, sowie durch ihre strategische Lage zwischen China und Russland. Gleichzeitig ist das Land stark von Rohstoffexporten abhängig und dadurch anfällig für Preisschwankungen und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung seiner Nachbarländer; zudem erschweren große Entfernungen und eine geringe Bevölkerungsdichte den Infrastrukturausbau. Die Wirtschaft wird maßgeblich vom Bergbausektor getragen, insbesondere vom Kupfer- und Kohleabbau. Ergänzend spielen Viehzucht, Landwirtschaft, Handel und Dienstleistungen eine wichtige Rolle.
