Sri Lanka verfügt über wirtschaftliche Stärken wie eine strategische Lage im Indischen Ozean, eine vergleichsweise gut ausgebildete Bevölkerung und bedeutende Agrar- und Textilsektoren. Gleichzeitig wurde das Land in den letzten Jahren durch eine schwere Finanz- und Schuldenkrise, hohe Inflation, Devisenmangel und politische Instabilität stark belastet. Die Wirtschaft wird vor allem von Textil- und Bekleidungsproduktion sowie Landwirtschaft getragen, insbesondere durch Tee- und Gewürzexporte. Ergänzend spielen Dienstleistungen, Hafenwirtschaft, Tourismus und Überweisungen aus dem Ausland eine wichtige Rolle.
