Key Events This Holiday-Shortened Week: PPI, Retail Sales, Jobless Claims, And Ukraine Ultimatum
It should be another busy, holiday-shortened, week after a volatile one last week as markets whipsawed around big moves in Fed pricing and AI bubble risk fears. Before we get to Thanksgiving, DB's Jim Reid writes that in the US, delayed post-shutdown data will be compressed into the first three days because of the holiday. Tomorrow brings September's retail sales and PPI, followed on Wednesday by jobless claims and durable goods orders. The claims data will be particularly important as they cover the November survey week, and the Federal Reserve is expected to lean heavily on these figures and other alternative indicators ahead of its December meeting, given there'll be no more payroll data prior to the FOMC.
Globally, attention will turn to inflation reports from Europe and Japan, as well as the long-awaited UK Budget, which could prove pivotal for the country's fragile fiscal outlook. Perhaps...

Global Stock Rally Fades As Ukraine Talks Continue, Focus Turns To Jackson Hole
Futures are flat ahead of consumer-sector earnings kicking off today, starting with a miss by Home Depot this morning. As of 8:00am ET, S&P futures were unchanged while Nasdaq futures drop 0.1% as Mag7 names are mostly lower ex-NVDA. Semis are mostly weaker ex-INTC which gained more than 6% on news SoftBank would invest $2 billion in the chipmaker and the US would take a 10% stake. Defensives are slightly outperforming Cyclicals. Europe's Stoxx 600 rose 0.5% as signs of progress toward a peace settlement in Ukraine lifted sentiment. The dollar nudged lower. Treasuries eked out gains after S&P Global Ratings affirmed its AA+ long-term rating for the US, with the 10-year rate falling one basis point to 4.32%. Commodities are weaker dragged lower by energy despite strength in precious and Ags. In the last 72 hours, Israel launched a preemptive strike against Iran when negotiations between Washington and Tehran were still ongoing. Iran was caught off-guard.
But Iran recovered more quickly from its Pearl Harbor moment than Israel expected. In less than 18 hours after Israel's surprise attack, Iran responded firing hundreds of ballistic missiles including hypersonic missiles into central Tel Aviv and across Israel.
Meanwhile, Israel's Iron Dome failed. Israeli intelligence failed. Now Netanyahu is pleading with Washington to intervene with American Military Power to rescue Israel from certain defeat; a defeat Netanyahu crafted with encouragement from Washington.
