Südafrika gilt als die am stärksten industrialisierte Volkswirtschaft Afrikas und profitiert von reichen Rohstoffvorkommen, entwickelten Kapitalmärkten und einer vergleichsweise gut ausgebauten Infrastruktur. Gleichzeitig belasten strukturell hohe Arbeitslosigkeit, extreme Einkommensungleichheit, wiederkehrende Stromengpässe und politische Reformhemmnisse das Wachstum. Das wirtschaftliche Fundament bilden Bergbau und Industrie, insbesondere Platin, Gold, Kohle sowie die Automobilproduktion. Ergänzend tragen Finanzwesen, Handel, Landwirtschaft und Reiseverkehr wesentlich zur Wirtschaftsleistung bei.
