Will Russian-US Tensions Likely Spiral Out Of Control If Ukraine Obtains Tomahawk Missiles?
Authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack,
The precedent set by Russia's restrained response to Ukraine obtaining the F-16s, which could also be nuclear-equipped, suggests that tensions with the US will remain manageable if Ukraine obtains the Tomahawks too due to the modus vivendi that's arguably been in place for managing them.
The latest talk about the US transferring longer-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, which Putin said earlier this month could only be used with US military personnel's direct involvement, has prompted concerns about a potentially uncontrollable escalation spiral. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov assessed that such a development would lead to “a significant change in the situation” but nonetheless reaffirmed that it wouldn't prevent Russia from achieving its goals in the special operation.
Ukraine's explicitly stated goal in obtaining these...

The Ukrainian Ambassador To Poland Admitted That His Co-Ethnics Don't Want To Assimilate
Authored by Andrew Korybko via Substack,
Polish-Ukrainian relations have been increasingly strained over the past few years due to the former grain dispute, the ongoing Volhynia Genocide dispute, and the influx of Ukrainian refugees into Poland.
It's this last element that's arguably the most sensitive since it's become a part of daily life for most Poles. Not only do a growing number of them object to state benefits being provided to this community, but they're also displeased with many of them refusing to assimilate into Polish society.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasily Bodnar inadvertently made matters much worse in a recent Facebook post where he confirmed that his co-ethnics don't want to assimilate. The context concerns the state's decision over the summer to allow Ukrainian to be taught as the second foreign language in schools if parents request it, the human resources are availa...

EU Slashes $1.7BN In Aid To Ukraine Over Corruption Concerns: 'Exasperation From Biggest Donors'
Have we reached the beginning of the end for Zelensky? Does this spell game-over and victory for Putin and Russia? The following is a very rare admission from the hard news pages of The New York Times:
James Wasserstrom, an American anticorruption expert, said in an interview that “the luster is definitely coming off” Mr. Zelensky's wartime leadership among governments providing financial assistance. He added, “There is exasperation at Zelensky in the donor community.”
Early last week, there were unexpected images coming from Kiev of the largest demonstrations against the Ukrainian government since Russia invaded more than three years ago, as more than 2,000 people gathered near the president's office, shouting "shame" and "veto the law," after President Zelensky signed a law gutting the country's anti-corruption agency.

Russia Takes Three More Ukraine Villages, With World Focused On Iran War
As all eyes are on the emerging Israel-Iran aerial war, and as ballistic missiles fly over Middle East skies, Russian forces have made more gains in Eastern Ukraine.
"Russian forces took control of three new Ukrainian villages — Yablonovka in the northeastern Sumy region, and Koptevo and Komar in the eastern Donetsk region," the Russian Defense Ministry indicated Friday.

"The state TASS news agency cited the ministry as saying that Russian troops had captured six Ukrainian villages over the past week," Reuters also notes.
This also comes after earlier this month Russian forces expanded ground operations into a more central oblast, in an escalation and expanded offensive:
Russian forces have secured a small foothold in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time since the early weeks of the full-scale war in 2022, The New York Times reported Friday.

US Is 'Major' Cause Of Ukraine War: Beijing Goes On Attack As Hegseth Tells Asia Allies China Threat Is 'Imminent'
China is pushing back hard against new Western criticisms of its foreign policy, as French President Emmanuel Macron and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went on the attack, hurling sharp criticisms at Beijing during the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, which noticeably China's Defense Minister Dong Jun chose to skip.
A fresh, strident Chinese denunciation was formulated at the United Nations in New York. Beijing typically is very careful with its Ukraine war statements, seeking to present itself as an outside, neutral and objective mediator, urging peace. But now Chinese officials are blistering angry over the ramped-up anti-China messaging coming from Washington and Europe. The rhetoric is clearly getting less restrained on all sides, as increasingly hot spots in Eastern Europe get closely linked to Asian flashpoints.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegset...

Ukraine's New Ceasefire Plan Calls For International Monitoring Of 'Land, Air & Sea' Truce
The Kremlin on Friday revealed that Russia's negotiating team for the next round of direct peace talks with Ukraine, scheduled for Monday in Istanbul, will remain unchanged, with Putin aide Vladimir Medinsky again leading the delegation. During the first talks, Russia's team was met with widespread skepticism - given how 'low level' it was, and it didn't so much as include Foreign Minister and veteran diplomat Sergei Lavrov.
Currently, the Zelensky government is threatening to boycott the Monday meeting, given that Moscow has reportedly yet to hand over a draft outline of its peace terms.

On the other side, The New York Times says of a memorandum that Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umierov handed over to Russia contains provisions for an expansive ceasefire.
It's said to include a pause in fighting for land, air and sea...

Yemen Taught Trump Some Lessons That He'd Do Well To Apply Towards Ukraine
Authored by Andrew Korybko via substack,
The lessons from Trump's Yemeni debacle could inform his future decisions on Ukraine...
Five New York Times (NYT) journalists collaborated to produce a detailed report earlier this week about “Why Trump Suddenly Declared Victory Over the Houthi Militia”. It's worth reading in full if time permits, but the present piece will summarize and analyze its findings. To begin with, CENTCOM chief General Michael Kurilla proposed an eight- to -10-month campaign for degrading the Houthis' air defenses before carrying out Israeli-like targeted assassinations, but Trump decided on 30 days instead. That's important.
The US' top regional military official already knew how numerous the Houthis' air defenses were and how long it would take to seriously damage them, which shows that the Pentagon already considered Houthi-controlled North Yemen to be a regional power, while Trump wanted...
