Das Wort Sentiment kommt aus dem französischen und steht für Gefühl, Empfindung oder Stimmung. Im Kontext zu den Kapitalmärkten versteht man unter Sentiment die aktuelle Stimmung der Marktteilnehmer. Es gibt verschiedene Sentimentindikatoren, welche wie folgt ermittelt werden: Befragung von Marktteilnehmern, Stimmungsauswertung von Börsenbriefen/ Börsenmedien, Geldzuflüsse in Fonds/ Zertifikaten oder die Put/ Call- Ratio von Optionen. In der Auswertung der Indikatoren gilt es festzustellen, ob die Marktteilnehmer die derzeitige, bzw. die zukünftige Entwicklung des Aktienmarktes eher positiv (bullish) oder negativ (bearish) sehen. Vor allem Extremwerte der Indikatoren dienen eher als Kontraindikator. Die Sentiment- Analyse sollte in Verbindung mit anderen Analysemethoden eingesetzt werden, wie etwa der charttechnischen Analyse von Aktienmärkten, um zukünftige Kursvorhersagen zu erstellen.
