If Solar And Wind Are Now Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels, Why Don't We Have More?

Energy Talking Points
Substack writer Alex Epstein has a great post on The “Levelized Cost of Energy” Scam.
If you ever hear anyone favorably compare solar and wind to coal, gas, or nuclear by citing a low LCOE—“Levelized Cost of Energy”—you are being scammed.
You've heard it over and over: “Solar and wind are now cheaper than fossil fuels.”
You might suspect something is wrong here, because if solar and wind were so cheap their developers wouldn't always be asking for subsidies, or claim the sky is falling when subsidies are taken away.
The suspicious claim that “Solar and wind are now cheaper than fossil fuels” is usually justified using an intimidating-sounding metric called LCOE: “Levelized Cost of Energy.”
In a 2020 report, the International Energy Agency used LCOE to claim that “renewable” energy costs a...

ROUNDUP: Vestas engt Ziele nach gutem Quartal ein - Aktienrückkaufprogramm (DPA-AFX)
|
|
|

A Cautionary Solar Tale: Billions Wasted Thanks To A Rush To Market
Authored by Gary Abernathy via The Empowerment Alliance (emphasis ours),
Back in the late 1970s there was a popular wine commercial with the film director Orson Welles reminding us that “some things can't be rushed,” and concluding with what became a famous catchphrase: “We will sell no wine before its time.”
One of the biggest yet least discussed problems with the race to establish the solar industry before the subsidies run out is that the product has arguably been rushed to market before it is perfected. The construction is getting ahead of the expertise—meaning that billions of dollars could be invested in solar devices that are soon to become outdated.
The haste to establish solar fields across more than a million acres of U.S. farmland—along with countless more installations around the world—has seemed to come with relatively little long-term planning as to deployment, functionality with existing elect...

Europe's Solar Surge Exposes Cracks In Aging Power Grid: Analysts
Authored by Evgenia Filimianova via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),
Europe's solar power boom is putting huge pressure on electricity grids that were never built to handle this much renewable energy, say analysts.

As a record number of new solar panels are being installed every year, the old grid system is struggling to keep up.
Solar generation capacity in the European Union continues to increase and reached an estimated 338 GW by 2024, according to SolarPower Europe.
To curb its dependence on Russian energy and accelerate its green transition, the EU set a goal in 2022 to install at least 700 gigawatts of solar power by 2030, enough to supply electricity to hundreds of millions of homes.
But the rapid expansion has exposed cracks in Europe's energy system, threatening to slow the transitio...
