Die Rohstoffmärkte lassen sich grundsätzlich in vier Gruppen unterteilen: Metalle, Energierohstoffe, Agrarwaren und Fleischprodukte. Zum effizienten Handel von Rohstoffen gibt es Kassa- (Geld gegen Ware) und Terminbörsen (Preis und Ware werden im voraus vereinbart und zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt ausgetauscht). Ein Großteil der Umsätze hat einen spekulativen Hintergrund und findet an den Terminbörsen statt, wo die Positionen durch ein Gegengeschäft jederzeit wieder aufgelöst werden können. Die wichtigsten Rohstoffbörsen befinden sich in Chicago (CME,CBOT), New York (NYMEX,NYSE-Liffe), London (ICE,LME) und Paris (MATIF).
