Legal obstacles stymie mechanism on organ donation between Hong Kong, mainland (SCMP)
Legal hurdles remain a reason why a proposed regular mechanism on organ donation between Hong Kong and mainland China has yet to materialise since discussions started in 2022, according to a top health official from the country.
Wang Haibo, director of the China Organ Transplant Response System (COTRS), told the Post on the sidelines of the Hospital Authority Convention on Tuesday that it would take time to revise laws on the mainland to spur the establishment of the mechanism.
“There is a legal......

A brutal ousting at Unilever? Not really. Boards shouldn′t be sentimental about chief executives | Nils Pratley (The Guardian)
Getting rid of Hein Schumacher may not follow the usual FTSE 100 script, but boards should be free to make clinical judgments if there's a better optionMost outings of chief executives from major FTSE 100 companies follow the same script. Financial results disappoint; the share price falls; improvement is promised but doesn't materialise; the shares fall further; a beleaguered board, harassed by the shareholders, finally pulls the plug. The process tends to take ages. The exit of Hein Schumacher from Unilever is nothing like that.First, he's been in the job for little more than 18 months. Second, the numbers for 2024 were ok, even if the revenue line for the fourth quarter was weak-ish. Third, the share price hasn't been crashing – it's up 10% since Schumacher's appointment. Nor does there appear to have been a quarrel over strategy, even if the choice of Amsterdam for the primary listing of the soon-to-be-demerged Magnum and Ben & Jerry's ice cream division will not have been universally pop...

Even if France′s budget doesn′t tackle the public deficit, let′s give thanks it exists | Agnès Poirer (The Guardian)
Politics have sunk so low since Emmanuel Macron's snap election, we're just grateful when foretold catastrophes don't materialiseHoura! Or rather, hurrah! On Monday, the French government, led by François Bayrou, our fourth prime minister in a year, did not fall. Our expectations have sunk so low since the July 2024 snap elections derailed our politics that we are grateful when catastrophes foretold don't materialise. When Michel Barnier's government fell before Christmas, it had been in power for just three months and had not managed to pass any sort of legislation. It was the first time since 1962 that a government had been toppled after a vote of non-confidence.The current government did not fall again last week thanks to the Socialists, who seem to be finally “decoupling” from the chaos-hungry far left of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The Socialists are now the kingmakers and quite enjoy the limelight. Let's hope they will continue to think with their head and not be tempted by futile revolutionary ...
